2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4

Asked by Brittany Sep 06, 2018 at 01:25 PM about the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee that would randomly
shut off while driving, I throw it in neautral and it starts
right back up. When it shuts off the RPM goes straight to
0. It use to do it once a month but now it’s frequently! I
can tell when it’s about to mess up because when I’m
sitting in Park the RPM will go up real quick and back
down and up and down. Sometimes I can tell by it starting
up weird or having to actually push the gas and break to
actually go. I’ll be driving and sometimes it’ll rev up. When
it shuts off the radio is on. What could it be!

My Jeep did that and it was the crankshaft position sensor. You can have it scanned for fault codes or have the Jeep scan itself. Here's how. Without starting the motor, quickly turn the key from Off to On three times and stop at "On". The odometer will flash the four digit fault code if there is one. When all codes have flashed, it will flash "done". The code you will likely see is P0320. If your get anything else, Google It for an answer. Okay. when the engine stalls it will restart after it cools off but I would waste no time getting it to a repair shop. The part is cheap but hard to reach on the upper bell housing, drive's side. Good Luck. Tell us what you find.
