Transfer case

My mechanic disconnected the transfer case on my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee because
it was making lots of noise. He said someone put the wrong oil in it and the oil burned
up. Is it safe to drive? He suggested waiting until fall and then think of replacing it. The
car has 135000 miles and we are trying to figure out if it is worth keeping. We just spent
money on replacing the boot.

Depends. The transfer case is just that…it transfers torque between the front and rear axles…if the transfer doesn't make noise with the front axle disconnected, then it's probably safe to drive in that it won't likely lock up while driving in 4X2.
Your 2004 grand has either a 247 or a 242 transfer case .(.most often the 247).... The 247 has a clutch/ viscous coupling inside that takes specific oil that sometimes service places dont put the right oil in it when they service it. The cheapest way out is to buy a used 1. tho i do rebuild them but i am in syracuse ny
Just replace the transfer case. Pick up a used one. They are relatively cheap. Easy to install. About a 45 minute swap out time. And by the way your transfer case takes ATF+4 FLUID.
Ok that’s what I was told to do just get a used one now is there a way to tell if there good.
