Transfer case output seal

Asked by Tiffany Jun 11, 2018 at 11:32 PM about the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2005 Grand Jeep Cherokee.  Firestone, Jeep and now a friend cannot fix this transfer case output seal from leaking.  It's not leaking on the ground, it's a very slow leak that you can only spot when you go under the vehicle.  The transfer case itself was replaced and it's under 3yrs old, there is nothing wrong with it but my friend thinks it wasn't fitted for the vehicle correctly since it's not a factory built case.  However, if that were true for the last 3yrs it should have been leaking and that hasn't been the case it just started in March.  Any insight would be great.

The mechanic that has it now said he filled the top of the seal with RTV and it hasn't leaked yet but he only had blue RTV so it melted. He said he's picking up some copper RTV to see how that works.

Good luck with that but it sound like a band air fix. The seal may not fit quite right. I have found that some are loose and some fit right.
