Yes, I was driving the car when it when the engine died... And it will not shift from first to any other gear and it will shift into reverse.

Check trans harness, connectors, and whether the TCM are supposed to match.
This year has an issue with the low gear gasket. If you get your tranny rebuilt you will see that the replacement gasket is twice the thickness of the original gasket.
I have had it to the Subaru Dealer and they told me it would be at least 10 hours of Diagnostic ... I had it towed home and the guy from the Tow truck checked it with his OBD Code reader and said it was giving him a Code for the A Pressure Solenoid so I am pressuring that ... I will post when I get that done
I don't mean to bother you but I was wondering if you got your Subaru Forester gear in engine solved ? I have a similar problem with my 2001 Subaru Forrester & I thought I might be able to get some advice from you. Thank you Lori***
I did get it fixed ... it was the solenoid A in the transmission there are 2 of them and I did some research online and found out where they were and bought used ones and put them in and it worked ... the solenoid would have run me about $120 each if I had not found used ones ... Thanks for those of you who had answers and your help
