T-stats on Subarus NEVER fail. Before eating the HGs ($1.6k), flush the rear heater hoses to ensure proper coolant flow. Then purge all air, and retest. If still percolating and overheating check for HC at overflow vessel. Be careful not to burn yourself. Odds are very high you need HGs, and should just trash this dinosaur.
