Has anyone had any experience with performance chips. I have a 2002 F150 super crew, 5.4 engine, 2wd, gas. I am looking to improve mpg.

diablo tuner cost me about 300 for my 4.6 v8 but runs strong now and better mileage about 3 mpg more and you can change tire size tranny shift strength and read codes and much more
all tuners and programmers are designed for horsepower. sometimes, depending on how you drive, if on highway and how loaded your truck is, you may see an increase in fuel economy. many times the computer in the overhead console will seem to indicate an increase in fuel economy that isn't there. the only way to tell is to fill the tank, drive the truck, and when you fill up again, divide the miles driven by the gallons used to fill back up. I have seen trucks claiming that they got 24 mpg that in reality were getting 17-18. stick with hypertech or superchips.
and to get the most out of the tuner, you have to run 93 octane fuel, so any increase in fuel economy is usually offset by the increased price of the fuel.
The chip tests I have seen show little to no improvement. Ford spends millions of dollars to get things right. For better mileage get good tires designed for mileage and keep them well inflated. Wider and bigger tires hurt your mileage. Don't haul a lot of extra weight around, keep it tuned up and drive fairly slow for the best mileage.
