Why wont my 1999 2.0 VW start?

Asked by theterminator Dec 21, 2013 at 12:18 PM about the 1999 Volkswagen Beetle 2 Dr GL Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The road was bad and the beetle stopped. I checked the coil, battery, and starter. It won't crank and it backfired.

get a NEW battery, as the new tin/antimony alloy ones (no lead anymore) will only last five years...when you do clean the connection at the frame/chassis with a wirebrush and the lug too free of corrosion~ this will restore operations of the relays such as the starter relay~

Check Fuse #14. Wire insulation chafes, rubs raw, and exposes copper conductor to chassis ground causing a short circuit that cause the fuse to blow.
