Transmission?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving my car in Drive, when it stopped receiving gas.  Because the car is a duel transmission car, I put it in gear and continued on.  I took the car to the shop the next day, where the mechanic 'supposedly' fixed it.  He put the car in 4th gear, permanently.  I told him, "I didn't want you to do this.  I ask you to fix the problem."
Where upon he said, "it is fixed."
Now, when I put my car in Drive, it automatically goes to 4th gear.  When I try to shift gears, nothing happens.
How can I change my car back to the way it drove before?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I took the car to a different mechanic than the man who usually looks at my Cadillac. He kept it 4 days and upon getting my car back he told me that a hose had a hole in it and that was all that needed replaced. The car now drives great again!
