Does a 2006 Subaru Forester have a camshaft bearing and if so, can it be replaced?
My son's car stopped running due to low or no oil. The timing belt (chain)
appears to be on but the cover looks broken. Really hoping this can be fixed
and looking for advice.

Ok, I have a couple not so good pictures but they may help. I have been told that it is possible the bearing seized inside the camshaft and could be replaced and would likely need a timing kit to set everything back in it's right place. What else would you like to know - I am an amateur at this and anxious to see if this car can be salvaged for not too much money.
The belt does not use oil. If your car is using too much oil, it may be worn out or have a major leak. The current cars use a cam chain that is in oil, but not the older cars. The broken cover can be replaced fairly cheaply but won't change your oil consumption issue.
What may have happened is a idler wheel on the cam belt lost a bearing and the belt slipped causing the car to stop running. A kit is about $200 with the belt, new idler wheels and a new water pump. Installation will run you around $500 though as it is labor intensive.
