Does an alternator whine

My car started whining when i started it and as i accelerated it got louder. I quit
whining fornthe next 4 days and started again today. Shop said it was the
alternator. Does that make sense?

yes they can whine. Take it to autozone they can test it for free. you can also measure your cars voltage. with the car running you should see about 14 volts. If under that, alternator is bad.
