2005 Ford Escape showing in D and will not turn over

I have a 2005 Escape, 3.0L 2WD, dash shows in D, will not start. Neutral switch has been replaced, still shows in D and engine will not turn over due to it thinks transmission in still in D.

thanks for your answer. I checked both ends of the shift linkage, floor shifter and tried another neutral safety switch. The linkage does shift through the gears but still showing stuck in D on the dash. Can this possibly be an ECM issue?
