Timing chains don't need replacement like a belt. The chains usually last hundreds of thousands of miles 300k +. Belt usually around 100k they should be replaced. Since 2003 4runner v6 have chains, but the 4.7 have a belt. i am not sure if 2009-2010 have any engine changes. The v6 of a limited and sr5 are the same.

Hi Kurt. I had a 1973 Ford F-250 I traded it in on the '78 I still have to this day. Anyway, at 4 years and unknown mileage (those old trucks rolled over at 99,999 back to 0) in 1977 the cable broke, the old style mechanical wire rope fed odometer) broke in 1976.. I never fixed it-- lazy--stuck at 141,500 and no speedometer either, I estimate, since my driving habits did not change, 190,000 to 200,000 (yep I traveled a lot...back and forth Phoenix to Edwards, 13 years in AF and got one single ride in flight-one) gas was 70 cents- the 360cid that I put a Holley 600 4bbl on Edelbrock intake manifold, and my timing jumped because of a stretched chain. Did not break. New chain, line up marks, no damage, drove it for another year. . The AF had Fords that they drove 300,000, abused mind you, never happened to them though.

IN case you are wondering, yes, the AF if they had you go someplace across country, you drove. That's right. They paid mileage if you chose to use your own vehicle, or you could take a POS that they offered. Aircraft we maintained obsessively to absolute perfection, the motor pool, not so much. But a truck can quit on you o the road, OK. F-4's, then I graduated to F-15's then F-16's, well, no can allow.

that sound a little premature on changing the belt, unless there is another problem like leaking waterpump or a noise coming from inside the cover. you should be fine for another 30k miles. i have seen the belts last way longer than what they recommend, timing belt on my 4runner lasted 290k miles lol, and it still had not broken before i changed it.

So I have a 2006 4Runner with nearly 174,000 miles on it. I need to keep driving on it. Some guy I talked to while I was getting my oil changed has me worried about my timing belt (or change). Am I correct in understanding that my model has a chain, and therefore I don't need to worry yet? I hope so! Thank you!
