Warning lights and rain
Asked by CarlosSchaff Jul 28, 2018 at 09:17 PM about the 2010 Toyota RAV4 Base
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
We have noticed that, whenever our car sits parked through a heavy downpour
of rain, when we start it up, the "check engine" and "Traction Control" warning
lights come on when we drive it afterwards. The warning lights stay on,
without flickering, until I disconnect the battery, and re-start the car. The lights
don't come on again until the car is left out in the rain again. I think this might
be caused by water getting into somewhere in the engine compartment, and
this occurred after the dealer replaced windshield wiper motors due to a recall.
Is this because of a water leak, or am I crazy?

Did you have the codes read when the light is on?

Do you mean the headlights or something else? What "light" are you referring to? Yes the warning lights stay on. That's the problem.
Did you have the codes read for the check engine and trac systems???

Understood. No, I have not had anyone read the codes. My concern is that these lights only come on after a heavy rain (the car's not in a garage). The lights go away after a day or two, or if I disconnect and re-connect the battery. The lights don't come back until it rains again.
I understand, but it would be nice to know the codes so you have a place to start to look.

I have the exact same thing. It started about two weeks ago after we had particularly heavy rain. It stayed on for a day or so and went off on its own. Happened again after more downpours. We had more heavy rain yesterday and it's on again today. I think it's definitely some sensor getting wet but I'm going to have the codes read just to see what they are.
I have this issue when gas tank gets below 1/4 tank, I fill it up and lights go out I suspect a problem with the gas cap.? Any one else
I have the same issue with mine after it rains. I had the codes read once and it was so generic the mechanic said not to worry about it. this become annoying after a while though.

Understood. I got rid of the car awhile back. In part, I was just very disappointed with the number of recalls on the car. Also, my local Toyota service center (Conicelli, in Springfield PA) was terrible. I drive a 2019 Subaru Forester now. Better car, and better service, clearly.
I have a 2007 Toyota RAV4. Three dash lights came on intermittently , then stayed on. Took it to the dealer a few times and had the sensors(?) reset. The lights would stay off awhile then come back on and stay on. The last time I only made it a mile before they came back on. I returned to the dealer and they said I needed to have the solenoid replaced in the transmission. Took the car to another dealer and was told the same. They supposedly replaced the solenoid and charged me approximately $860.00 When I went to pick my car up, they told me the lights came on during the test drive and that I need to replace the transmission. Other than the lights being on, the car was and is running fine. Feel frustrated and like I was ripped off. What good are diagnostic machines if what they diagnose isn't the answer to the problem?
My 2019 Honda Civic does the same thing. It rained the other night...got in the car today and all warning lights were flashing intermittently as though everything that could possibly go wrong on the vehicle was going wrong...annoying beeping sounds too. Waited a while and tried it again..... after the rain... no longer had bizarre warning lights. This has happened twice with everything going back to normal quickly. On another forum it said that mechanics were saying it was caused by mice chewing the soy based wires (not a good idea for them to install rodent food under our vehicles...) but if that were the case, it wouldn’t just suddenly go back to normal.

My 2010 rav4 had the same problem. The o2 sensor was cracked. Had it replaced and the problem has not occurred since.
My 2011 Toyota RAV4 is having the same issues after a rain downpour. The vehicle was fine yesterday (no maintenance lights on). Went to AutoZone and had the codes pulled. The codes are P0137, P0504, P0571, C1241, and C1201. Any thoughts?

Bought a 2009 Rav4 brand new. Still have it in 2022 with 80k miles on it. About six years ago the engine , 4 wheel drive and skid sensor lit after a rain storm. Went to my mechanic and could not find a problem. Lights went off after few days. Now it happens every rain storm. I just wait for them to go out on their own. Been doing this for six years. I count on my instincts if there is a problem, not a computer.
