Does anyone know if there is a problem with the water pumps on 2008 Ram 1500s? I have gone thru 3 in 13 months.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I purchased my 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 in June 2012. On July 20th I had the water pump go out and had to have it the serpetine belt and thermostat replaced. December 30th I had the water pump fail again - this time had to have the Radiator, Thermostat and water pump all replaced - this was after only 4850 miles since last one failed. I just had my Water pump replaced today (Aug 13,2013) after 7400 miles since last repair. What could be causing all these water pumps to go out? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Tensioner frozen causing to much pressure on the drive pulleys, that's about it, on a Hemi or 4.7L?
Crappy, foreign remanufactured part (most common): tensioner: belt on wrong: pulleys out of alignment (second most common)- you're certain that it's the waterpump, not a bypass hose or tube? I've never had the 4.7L apart but a lot of Mopar products have a bypass hose and tube directly behind the water pump. Could there be a lot of end-play in the crankshaft and pulley to skew the water pump?
There is no bypass tubes on a 4.7L but here is another idea... How is your centrifugal fan clutch? If ity is sloppy it could also cause the pump to fail, assuming that the shaft bearing is going out
Good one Chris! It sure could! I remember a Medium duty truck that the owner had decided to eliminate the thermocoupler and bolt the fan on with an adapter. The water pump failed (literally came apart) after a period of time and the fan went through the hood, radiator hoses and generally made a mess. That makes sense since it was transferred from one failed pump to the next.

There is a design flaw with the metal on the block and the pump being different. The weep hole is not leaking. I'm on my third pump that leaks through the seal between the block and the pump body. I even tried extra sealant around the water pump last change. Added in addition to the factory gasket so it would fill imperfections. NOPE. After a few months it leaks again. Here's why I know this is metal to metal issues. Because there is a period of leakage only when the engine starts to cool down. The metal shrinks at different rates of the pump. When the truck is nice and hot, NO leaks. When it cools down, I get a small puddle over night. When it's cold No leaks. Trying to find a way to properly install an extra gasket of some sort in there to keep the hot to cold warping down.
