Chugging shaking rough idle low rpm cold

Asked by Brennan Jan 10, 2018 at 04:48 PM about the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2011 Vw Jetta 2.5l when its cold out has been
starting rough. When I start it, it starts and right
after chuggs and stalls or chugs and then fires up
to how it normally is. When it is chugging I think
there is black smoke coming out but then it's ok, it
does smell abit also when it's tsarted the exhaust.
If the car stalls I can start it up and it will be fine
second time. It takes abit longer when I turn the
key to start up opposed to when the engine is
warm. When it is warm out it is fair bit better.
drives fine and feels fine. Also when I start it and it
shakes and chugs the rpms go very low and it
either stalls or builds up and is fine

Have your catalytic converter checked. Sounds like it is deteriorating and blocking your exhaust.

Have your intake manifold tightened The 2.5L engines tend to rattle the bolts loose. Also i would have it checked for carbon deposits in the intake system. if your blowing black smoke you likely have a bad build up in the engine. so when it starts its blowing it all out. During the winter you can also try using a thinner oil such as 5w30 instead of 40 it won't be as thick in the colder weather and the car will start better. jsut be sure once warm weather hits to change it back.

Do 2.5 have direct injection? I wasn't sure so I didn't check but they do? Thanks for the tip

My 2011 Golf has the exact same problem. Did you ever figure out what was wrong? We’ve taken it to a mechanic and they couldn’t find anything. Thanks!

Guys I used to have the same problem after shaking and chasing wires and codes and clear the codes I figure that the probably was on the under the seat on the back they so wires coming out from the gas tank every time somebody sit on it my car used to do all that other than you saying him in the beginning check your wires from the gas pump locator is rear seat passenger side the way it looks like it's Define but I don't know what the magic but when people sit on those wires the car change so I took a piece of foam I cut it and I laying on on top of the wires and then put the seat back on guess what problem solved
