Oil capacity

100

Asked by Elmer91 Jan 19, 2016 at 02:58 PM about the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've never owned a Chevy until recently, and I need
to change the oil but don't like taking my vehicles to
shops unless i have to.

It's a 2011 Silverado 1500, I believe 6.2 v8 (was
listed with 5.7 and 6.2 at dealership). How many
quarts of oil does this take? And I've always used
quakerstate for everything from vehicles to tractors
but now I'm thinking maybe synthetic but don't
know enough about it to switch. Could I get some
pointers on that?

Thanks

It should be listed in your owners manual under capacities I believe. That engine used to take 6 quarts. A buddy just bought a 2016 and it holds 8 quarts. You can go longer in between oil changes on synthetic oil but it's twice as expensive. I prefer regular oil at the recommend changes. I worry that the oil filter won't hold up for longer intervals.

Oh, my buddies engine REQUIRES synthetic. 0w20...a type I had never heard of before. Look on your oil filler cap or owners manual for the correct weight.

They didnt put the 5.7 or the 6.2 in a 1500 back in 2001. Your truck most likely has the 5.3, and it takes 6qts with an oil filter change, and it should be dexo synthetic.
