Car won't start

Asked by Jamie Mar 08, 2014 at 10:06 AM about the 2008 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL

Question type: General

I sat in my car for 20 minutes with the engine off waiting for my son. When I went to start
the car, it wouldn't start. The brake pedal was very hard and the steering whelp wouldn't
was locked.  I read somewhere that I had to jump the car. We did and it started right up.
But now I'm afraid to sit in the car without the engine running.

If you were listening to the radio or had any of the interior lights on they could have run the battery down enough for it not to crank. Might want to have your battery tested it could also be about time for a new one.

Just had this issue with brake pedal being hard to move and my steering wheel was not locked. This happened once before and I couldn't remember how I fixed it. Called Nissan, called my regular car place, neither were any help. Tow guy came and started it in 30 seconds. Here's the hack: While in park, press the gas and the brake at the same time as hard as you can (to the floor) then push the start button while holding them down. You may need to lightly start to release the gas but keep your foot on the brake and it starts right up. He said it's common and from moisture on the engine. My car had been sitting for a week while I was away on biz.

This absolutely work l I have a 2012 Nissan Altima and my car wouldn't start it kept saying break so I called someone and they told me to press on the break as hard as I can press on the car to start button and it keep holding both together. The engine kept trying to start I keept pressing on it until it started and lo and behold it did I waited 15 minutes before moving

I have a 2017 Nissan Altima Sr and my break locked up after putting the car in park. Steering wheel was locked as well. THIS WORKED!!! Pressed down on both at the same time then pushed the ignition button and the break instantly released when the car cranked. Checked my battery and I have acid on both sides so will be cleaning that off ASAP!!

I am currently having a similar issue with my 2013 Altima. I have not tried the above remedies, but I have looked a little on you tube. I am thinking it could be a break switch issue. Hopefully that is all it is since it is a minimal cost part and easily replaced.

Tried the hard brake and gas trick but no luck. My battery shows voltage and it runs up above 13v when car jumped and running smoothly. Just got the Nissan official brake switch on Amazon for 24$. Trying that out soon. Wish me luck!!

Same issue 2014 Altima, car had me stranded in Ohio and I am from New Jersey. Thank God the brake/gas method did start my car this morning. I have to do something, thinking about trading car in, don't know what to do. I am a single mom and really need a RELIABLE car to get to work.

Also try checking your battery. I checked later and there was acid on my connectors so there was not a full connection being made to the battery.

What if the brake switch thing doesn’t work nor dies pushing both pedals work?? It went dead while driving. Now what even jump off..

Same happened to me none of the remedies worked for my 2009 Altima but I hope it works for you. Also there is a key fob hole to the left of the steering wheel and that might help. Didn’t help in my case but it might in yours. I did take it to a shop the last time this happened, 2 weeks ago, and they fixed it for 300$ but it happened again. So goodluck. ♥︎

Dump Nisan and get a Toyota or a Honda. I'm having the same problem with my 2012 Murano SL. The first time was Dec. 5, 2018, replaced the battery and all went well until about three weeks ago. I went shopping and when I was ready to leave I noticed right away that the brake pedal was hard to depress, in fact, it wouldn't go down at all and the car wouldn't start. On my second try everything went back to normal without doing anything different. The same thing happened last week almost an exact replay and then after stopping for gas several days later the same thing happened only this time I had to get a boost and that worked just fine. I had it checked out at my garage and they couldn't find anything wrong after doing several different tests. Two days have past and it hasen't happened again but I did buy an Imazing IM23 Car Jump Starter 15V 1500A Peak 12000mAH in case it happens again. Our previous car was a Nisan, Altima SL and I will say that my wife and I did like that car but our experience with the Murano (leaking transfer case) and our interaction with Nisan has proven to be very disappointing, needless to say, there will be no more Nisans for us in the future.

I tried pressing both pedals down and it worked. Thank you so very much!!! Does this mean the brake switch is bad and should be replaced? I drive my car every day; my job is an hour away from my home. The car hasn't sat unused since I purchased it in Dec. I read that the steering wheel lock mechanism often goes bad and prevents the car from starting... could this be the issue or is it most likely the brake switch? The car would turn over but wouldn't start and the brake pedal was very stiff

I don't have an answer to the first question but my wife's 2015 Altima was having similar issues. I could not get it to stay running and when I tried over my lunch break I couldn't even get it started. I was running out of options and didn't want to have the car towed to the mechanic so I saw this about the gas and break at the same time. It actually worked! Anyone who has had to use this trick, what ended up being the problem? Or is this just a Nissan quirk we have to deal with?

Hilding both pedals worked. Key fob battery may be to blame.

Mines was simple.....it needed a battery. Yes, the hack mentioned through out this thread worked, but not for long. Get your battery replaced with a new battery. I hope this helps someone .

Hello everyone. About a month ago I posted a question and provided the answer to it as my 2017 Nissan Altima issue. Face you the car would start and then later would not want to start back up after sitting. Brake and gas starting hack did not work for me but in the work for others. My problem turned out to be a just needed a battery. Last week my 2006 Nissan Altima begin to do a very similar thing but I bought a brand new battery for it at the same time I bought one for my 2017 Nissan Altima. After a lot of mechanic checking, it turned out that it was my crank position sensor. That turned out to be the issue with my 2006 Nissan Altima. I have a neighbor who has the same car same here and his issue also was also a sensor. So have you sensors checked. I hope this helps someone

I am having the same problem with 2017 Nissan Altima! Brake pedal hard to push and car won’t start but I tried the trick I read here about pushing gas pedal and brake pedal down at the same time and it started but it keeps doing it! Everywhere I go and cut my car off I have to do that to get it to start! What could be the issue?

HEY EVERYONE! I had a problem starting my Rogue and ended up taking it to the dealership. I had a master Nissan mechanic tell me that Nissan has a "quick start" issue. If you start your car, and for example just move it onto the street and shut it off without letting the engine warm up a little (what happened to me), it won't start again after. We ended up getting it started by pressing the button and manually injecting gas by stepping on the gas pedal a few times. Eventually it started. The battery/starter/fuel pump/etc were all new or fine. The mechanic said to allow the car to warm up and this won't happen. Hope this helps someone, as it cost me $200 to learn this

It is the brake sensor it is $68 replacement for the part. Have had no trouble since this was replaced. The sensor wears out over time. Took about 20 mins to replace

The gas/brake trick worked on my 2018 Altima. My question is—what causes that to work? What is the cause of the problem so it gets fixed and I can start the car as intended?

My car would not start but the electronics (radio, lights) would still turn on. The break pedal was completely stiff and could not push it. The problem was the stop lamp switch. This sends a signal to the car computer saying the break is being applied. Without that signal the car will not start

Hey! I tried the gas pedal+brake thing. Worked like a charm. Some other info that may help others. This happened after a small movement of the car, my fault I should’ve known better, due to alternate side parking. The car still turned over, just wouldn’t start. Probably just the vapor-lock. Hope this helps for people! Good luck

Just wanted to share my experience, as this may help others. Have a Nissan 2009 Altima 2009 which my spouse uses to go to the train. Problem started about 3 years ago, where the car would not start. Sporadically. We would patiently try for 10 minutes and it would start.. First time towed the car to local mechanic who mentioned the issue may be related to 2009 nissan altima recall steering lock. Had this addressed by Nissan. Issue continued. Took the car to the Nissan. As always if you can start the car to take it to the shop, it always manages to start when it is with the mechanic at the dealer. This year the Wait 10 minute trick didn't work... Car was out of action for a week. Found this forum and tried the hack where we step on the brake and gas.. This worked once... We got lucky and the car started.. Look it straight to another local mechanic.. He diagnosed the issue to a brake sensor which was changed. Issue has not re-occurred.. Sharing a photo of the part changed and what my dashboard looks like..

My car had this issue (break sticky won’t compress all the way car will half crank and won’t start) once i replaced the switch it worked. It happened again today with the brand new switch in it so i knew it couldn’t have been the switch. I indeed up jumpstarting the car and it worked like a charm. This issue could be your battery so try jumping your car before buying the switch or anything else.
