Just replaced water pump on 2004 325i, and it overheated on the test drive...thermostat?

Asked by Vanessa Jul 25, 2015 at 11:45 PM about the 2004 BMW 3 Series 325Ci Convertible RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our little car has 170,000 miles on it and we just love her, but last Monday I was on
my way to work and the water pump went out, causing the serpentine belt to shift, the
fan to start hitting something loudly, it overheated, and after towing her home and
replacing the water pump, I thought we were good.  I went to test drive her and only
made it two freeway exits before she overheated... took over two hours to get her
home. Can it be the thermostat?

check the thermostat !! and bleed all the air out of the cooling system..over heating while driving down the road rules out the fan.. also check return hose ..well both to make sure when its hot that they are not sucking closed.
