2006 Charger RT stalls just after fill up
Asked by 67cuda Feb 06, 2013 at 01:28 PM about the 2006 Dodge Charger R/T RWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have experienced something strange and would like to know if others have had the same problem.
A week ago I fill the charger up (premium) and then made a very short drive to the local DD drive up and the car stalled, it started up again with no issue but then stalled again a few seconds later. I started the charger again and drove home less than a mile and parked it in my gararge. the following morning I started the car and backed out of the gararge it stalled again but restarted with no problem. Drove the car all week without additional issues.
Yesterday I filled the Charger up again and the same thing happened all over again. Could it be that I need a new gas cap or is something else going on that I'm not aware of.
Your input would be great!

I have heard of it in other makes. Next time you gas up, don't pump in extra gas to bump it up to a round dollar. There a vapor recovery canister that might get gas in it and cause stalling. Not really sure if that's the cause in your case but give it a try.
I agree with tenspeed...you're over filling.
The problem is not only when you "top off"... if you fill-up without topping off, the problem also occurs... Mine started doing this at about 90K miles and I never top off. The problem seems to be with the vapor purge valve on top of the tank. This valve is designed to open and allow fuel vapor (gases - NOT LIQUID) to flow to the engine and be burned off instead of venting to the atmosphere. When this valve is functioning properly, it should never be open when the tank is full. Apparently, over time the valve gets stuck open from corrosion allowing liquid fuel (from a fill-up) to enter the vapor line. This will cause the engine to run "rich" and the o2 sensor will detect unburned fuel in the exhaust causing the computer to lower the quantity of fuel to the injectors resulting in the engine miss or even an engine stall.
BTW: The Charger and 300 have the same chassis and will have the same problems.,
Don, Thank you it makes perfect sense and just so you know my Charger RT has 127,000 miles on it.
Watch out for dealerships. They said it was an internal thermostat which cost over1000 to replace. Thanks for the info!
Burke, traded in the Charger RT for a 2013 Challenger RT and all is right in the world.

Bought a used 2006 Charger RT last year and day 2 had the stalling issue. Took back to dealership who blamed son for overfilling. So, he never fills up (annoying). Had car in for engine light and referred them to the news item on the stalling issue and they said it needs a new gas tank ($1500+). I asked about EVAP and they said that would not fix it. TRUTH or LIE?
CarLoverinVa, Can't answer the true fix but I did start using 93 octane and the problem went away but it could have come back you see I traded the Charger in for a New Challenger RT two months ago.

Thank you. This is very helpful. I have a 2006 Charger Daytona RT 5.7 Hemi, and twice that I have filled up it has stalled... What is the solution to this? Can anyone help?
CarLoverInVA answered 11 years ago
So here is a compilation of stories - service advisor, 300 owner, tech: this is a big issue that Chrysler has acknowledged, but no formal service bulletin or recall. YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS COMPLAINT WHEN GETTING ANY SERVICE DONE. ALSO REPORT/CALL CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE and provide the last 8 digits of your VIN and have them log in the stalling problem. There is deterioration in the upper parts of the filler pipe. The vent (can't recall the proper name) causes the sensors to think that gas is overfilling which shuts off the car (like some cars that will not start if the gas cap is not on completely.) replacing this part will not solve the problem long term. Only solution (300 owner) was gas tank replace. Lots of $$$. I have reported this as a safety issue since the car can shut off when driving on an expressway going 60 mph or turning in front of oncoming traffic. Other option is never to fill up tank.
CarLoverInVA answered 11 years ago
Don is correct above. It is the vapor canister (EVAP) but replacing it will not solve problem for good. Guy with 300 still had to replace gas tank AFTER doing the EVAP replacement. Complain and describe your safety concern. Safety complaints get attention.

Thank you CarLoverinVA, Don and everyone else. This was very helpful. I will call the number and log it in. I still need to go and do the recalls and the 90K service. I will not top off again... Thanks again.
My 2006 charger RT started doing this last week. Happened while I was turning and my power steering went out. Very unsafe
CarLoverInVA answered 10 years ago
There really should be a recall on this. Especially when it happens while driving. Only way for them to track the issues is to call Chrysler Customer Service line and log a complaint and ask if there is a recall or service bulletin. Be sure to tell them of the safety issue. If we all do this, maybe we can get this resolved. It is a Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger common complaint that even the dealer service mgrs know about.
I have experienced the same issue the 1st time well over 2 years ago . The NHTSA has had an investigation open for 6 months and there have simply been documents traded back and forth between Chrysler and the NHTSA but there has been no movement. I believe that if you submit a complaint (and their list of complaints grows) we (the Dodge Magnum owners) will hopefully see movement on this becoming an official recall. CarLoverInVA answered 10 years ago
Great help NJ_Driver. That link didn't connect, so this should work for anyone who has the Charger or 300 in the trouble years (mine is 2006). www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners Once on the link, File a Complaint so this can be addressed as a major safety issue. When a car just shuts off when driving, at any speed, it is NEVER a safe thing.
Same thing just happened to my 06 R/T. Have to replace the tank and canister. Logged with Chrysler. Is it just based on the number of complaints?
CarLoverInVA answered 10 years ago
First, you need to make sure that the DEALER SERVICE MANAGER reports your problem into Chrysler. If you have had a safety related issue (car cuts off going 55 mph or cuts off when crossing traffic intersection) that gets Chrysler's attention. Call Chrysler Customer Care. Here are a few successful phone numbers: Phone: 800-992-1997 Alternate: 800-247-9753 If you need to call Chrysler customer service you can do so from 8 A.M. to 8 P.M. Monday to Friday or 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Saturday and Sunday. (EST). It could be a long hold, but don't give up. Customer Service US: 1-800-247-9753 Customer Service Canada (English): 1-800-465-2001 Customer Service Canada (French): 1-800-387-9983 Customer Service Mexico (From Mexico Phone): 01-800-505-1300 You will need the last 8 - 12 digits of your VIN. Tell them you want to determine if there is a RECALL or Service Bulletin for your problem (Car Cuts OFF). Don't tell them YOUR DIAGNOSIS. You can tell them that you have spoken to other owners with similar problems and what they had to do, if you'd like. Emphasize SAFETY since that is your main concern in addition to the frustration and repeated service visits and costs. You want to file a complaint even if there is no Service Bulletin.
I have a 2006 magnum r/t and I changed the purge valve solenoid 38 dollars it is located on the passenger front tower very easy to change I even over filled and not shutting off any more its worth a try
when I said tower I meant to say shock tower
Chrysler issued a warranty extension under the NHTSA investigation number PE13-016. The only problem is they only extend the warranty on the tanks for a select ammount of VIN numbers. My car was not covered under the VIN list they created but I was still having the same issue. I ended up having to replace the tank, and pay for the dealership misdiagnosis, out of my own pocket. Chrysler has been absolutely NO HELP what so ever and neither has the dealership. Every person I talk to tells me that they empathise with me but that their hands are tied. Same exact problem, recreated the same exact way, and with the same exact resolution.
They will only confirm or deny that your VIN is covered if you call them with it. I can not find a listing anywhere. I keep seeing more and more 2006 Chargers starting to have this issue. The only think I can think of is if you have the issue go to the NHTSA website and lodge a complaint with them. We need to get the warranty extended for all the vehicles that are having this problem, not just the select few that they want to cover.
Thanks for the info Chuck. Will call with the VIN and lodge a complaint with the NHTSA. You would think that the dealership would have the VINs. If some of the VINS have the problem, why wouldn't all of them. I agree with you that all should be covered. I purchased my car new in 2006. It is now 2014. I never overfilled the tank. Funny it happened now if I had been overfilling as the dealership wanted to say was the cause (it means that I would have been overfilling for 8 years?). So, for others who are told they are overfilling, I would say it is not always the case.
The dealership told me the same thing. Unfortunately for the first canister replacement I beleived them. I thought maybe more gas was getting in after that firts 'click' of the hose and I should just be more cautious. I started making sure that I didn't let the hose get the first click and I wasn't completely filling up again, but it still got past about 7/8 of a tank full and then it died out again. leaving me stuck in the middle of an intersection in a panic trying to get it out of traffic. When I had it towed to the dealership again (A month after the first canister replacement) they wanted to use the same "you filled the tank too full" argument, and that is when I had enough. I did my research and found the investigation. I e-mailed the guy at the NHTSA and within a week PE13-016 was closed and he assured me that Chrysler was going to send me a letter because they were extending the warranty on the tanks. Unfortunately I was not in the VIN group and I am still waiting to get this covered. Good luck to you and I hope yours is one that actually is covered. I've given Chrysler and the dealership plenty of oppertunity to make this right and they have not.

Same thing here. I bought my 2006 Charger R/T new June 2005. I have 95000 on my car and it has been doing this stalling issue for over a year now. I don't have the funds to fix it but the first time this happened while driving on the grapevine! With all the GM problems of them not addressing issues like this, I sure hope the Chrysler Corp does. I will file my complain now. Thanks for all the info guys!
I have the same problem with my 06 Charger. Fill it up and it stalls, shuts off and loses steering. Extremely dangerous. Dealership is not aware of problem. Called Dodge and they were no help. My VIN number was not part of the extended warranty. They also told me they are not responsible for anything if there is an accident. I referenced the NHTSA (safercar.gov) investigation results and still no results. Even though the investigation on the NHTSA website is closed I still wrote in a complaint and saw many new complaints about this problem there also. I hope Dodge understands this is a safety issue and provides the extended warranty to fix the problem to everyone. I am making sure my problem is logged in is an many places as possible. The information provided here has been extremely helpful.
having the same problem here, will call chrysler on it and report it. thanks guys for your input. never experienced anything like this. i ended up replacing a fuel pump, after too many stalls it quit. but having same stalling issues with a new fuel pump. will try the purge-valve solenoid next. very aggrievating when you can't fill up at the gas pump.

My 2006 Charger R/T had the stalling problem and my local dealer confirmed there is a lifetime warranty on the tank and it will be replaced at no cost, BUT! there are no tanks available and no idea of when they will be, this is because of the massive demand for tanks.
CarLoverInVA answered 10 years ago
EnglishPete, can you ask the dealer what the Service Bulletin # is or the specific reference post or memorandum (maybe even a photocopy or the page or screen) that can be provided to all the others impacted. I also am curious to know if the cost for the tank removal and reinstall is fully covered by the lifetime warranty? The replacement labor cost will not be cheap if everyone only gets the 'part' but is responsible for the labor. Thanks for your update.
EnglishPete answered 10 years ago
I saw on the screen at the dealership confirmation of a lifetime warranty, I put a call in yesterday requesting further information and will post any relevant details that I get.
Thanks EnglishPete and CarLoverinVA - any information would be helpful to get my money back - the tank alone costs a lot because of the scarcity - my part was located in another state and had to be shipped. The labor costs were also astronomical. I have held on to my receipts so I could file for reimbursement if a recall, etc. occurred.
EnglishPete answered 10 years ago
DKA, I believe if you go to a Chrysler dealership and give them your VIN number they should give you an answer there and then as to if your car is eligible and if they will reimburse your costs.
I was at a dealership - they said it was not a recall item. That's why I was hoping you could provide additional information. Thanks
Under 999999 miles or 999 months, it is an EXTENDED WARRANTY item, not a recall. With thoses numbers it's essentially a lifetime warranty. Call your Dodge dealer service and give them the VIN; they'll tell you.
Today I got an extended warranty letter from Chrysler so I can go and get my fuel tank replaced. The letter came with a refund request in case I had already replaced it. If you are having the fuel tank problem (I have an 06 Charger RT), make sure you call Chrysler about it, so it can be documented. Also, let you dealership know what is going on. Many times they have no idea about it. About a month ago I called Chrysler to check on my VIN number with no positive results. But today I received that nice surprise in the mail.
I received a letter in the mail today from Chrysler Group LLC. It has my car's VIN on it. I thought I would share in case it helps someone else. "This letter is to inform you that the warranty period (3 years or 36,000 miles) on your vehicle's 19-gallon fuel tank has been extended to lifetime coverage. This extended fuel tank warranty coverage applies to select model year 2005-2006 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Magnum vehicles. Our records show that you either own or lease one of the vehicles affected by this extended warranty. We are extending the fuel tank warranty period because some of the affected vehicle population may experience a condition where the fuel shut-off float, in the multifunction control valve sticks, which may result in the vehicle stalling after refueling. If you are experiencing this condition now or in the future, simply contact your dealer to have the repairs performed. Conversely, if you do not experience this condition, then your fuel tank multifunction control valve is operating correctly and no repair is necessary. If you have already experienced this stalling after refueling condition and previously paid for a repair, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement. You may complete the enclosed Customer Reimbursement Claim Form and send your original receipts, invoices, and/or repair order to the following address for reimbursement. Your claim will be acted upon within 60 days of receipt. Chrysler Customer Assistance Center PO Box 21-8004 Auburn Hills, MI 48321-8004" There are 2 more paragraphs. I am filing for reimbursement. I want to thank everyone who contributed to this thread. I hope this is helpful.

DKA, You ROCK! Thanks for the info. I just got off the phone with my local Dodge Dealer and they said my car had an extended warranty for the gas tank due to stalling issues after fill-up. Thanks for giving the information about the letter. Now after over 2 years of dealing with this issue it will finally be fixed! This Thread is the best so far!

I just received the same letter in the mail....I have 2006 Charger RT/Hemi. I filled my tank and not even 2 blocks away my car stalled right in the middle of the road. A nice police officer saw me stalled and stopped and directed traffic while I called a tow truck. As soon as I called the dealer to tell them the car was on the way to them for a check up they asked me if I had recently filled the tank. So Chrysler KNEW something was wrong. They replaced the vapor canister and the solenoid proportional surge and charged me $339.00 plus $60.00 towing fee. I am happy to have received this letter in the mail today because I could be getting a refund for my troubles.
thriftygal - I agree - They Knew - I got the same response, but you got off light - my dealership rooked me big time. Don't think they won't be hearing from me - and publicly on their website as well. My reimbursement claim is ready to mail tomorrow.
I'd like to potentially take credit for all the letters going out NOW (or could just be coincidence). I spent quite a while with Dodge Support two days ago (thus my post two days ago explaining 999999miles or 999months - direct from the support gal's writing), and the gal said "we sent you a letter long ago." I asked for a resend and was told "no." Guess what, I got the same letter as all of you TODAY. Called dealer two days ago, and free new tank/cannister on the way. Peace all!
Now to find a warranty/recall on transmission getting stuck at 55mph (requiring a full stop and restart). There MAY be one. Peace
thriftygal answered 10 years ago
I sent my letter and all the documentation they requested in to them today. I goofed when I said previously that the dealer charged me $339 plus $60 towing fee. Those two charges were only for towing and labor. They charged me $174 for the parts. So my total costs were $573. Their letter says they will reply within 60 days. We'll see.

My R/T is at the dealership in Fort Myers today having a new tank fitted, after being told there were no tanks available I went to the top guy there who was brilliant, the next day I had a call from parts to say the tank would be delivered the next day, and it was!

Here's an update from Eastern Virginia on the 'tank' letter. You need to go to a Chrysler service location who will 'inspect' your care for the issue. Even though I have records in their system that I have brought the car in a number of times for this issue, I still had to go in. They basically logged into the system and the associated bulletin, and put in the order for the tank. The dealers are able to order, and get ONE tank per week. So, if you did not contact the service department early, you may have to wait. If you have multiple dealers in your area, maybe call to see where you would be on the list.
CarLoverInVA answered 10 years ago
BTW, thanks to all for contacting Chrysler and the NHTSA to escalate the safety of this problem. I think our persistence made this finally happen. Also, I am sure Chrysler did not want a GM issue to the tune of Brand and financial exposure with all of us driving a car that could just shut off while driving. Potential Deaths will always get Attention.
I called my local dealer today and was told my VIN number was on the list to have my gas tank replaced. He said they are going by build date. Said my Chrysler 300 SRT8 would be fixed free of charge!! Will take one month to get new tank.
CarLoverInVA answered 10 years ago
Finally, all of the 2006 Chargers and 300s will get the gas tank replacement. Not sure about other years. I think the contact to NTSB and directly to Chrysler with this stalling being an injury or death potential, depending on where you stall, plus with all of the GM issues in the news, Chrysler made the right decision for all of us owners. Yeah! Ours was replaced and no problems and can fill the tank. Double Yeah!

So chrysler will give life time warranty on all 2005-2006 chryslers ,magnums, and chargers not having to do with the vin numbers now ??
I am having the same issue with my 2002 300M, not sure if this will be recalled, but i have put in a complaint with a local Chrysler Dealership. I hope more people with my 2002 300M have the same issues so Chrysler can recall them too.

Just wanted to add to this string of post. I have an 08 Charger R/T and have had a lot of the same issues spoken about. Time and time again the car will not crank up after putting fuel in it, whether you fill it up or just add $20. Any hard turning to the left or right will cause the car to stall at times. The dealership claims they know of no issues that would cause the problems I have had. Last month I considered trading the car in after I had the engine replaced with a new one. "Another story . When they took me to the holding lot where my car was, which was located behind their shop area, I noticed a rack with over 20 dodge charger/ Chrysler 300 gas tanks. When I asked what the deal was with them I got no answer. Sucks because I love the car but hate the issues that have came along with it.
Because of this issue, the way it was handled, and many other issues with my 06 RT charger, and the way chrysler and their dealerships are, never again will I be buying anything chrysler.

So here is a new one for you all. Today (Sunday) I got dressed and got in the car to go to a customers house. The car started up just fine but would not shift into gear. I kept trying but nothing happened. I pulled out the manual and it said there was a reset button on the console so I went exactly according to the book's instructions and pushed the reset button and nothing. I then called a friend and he came over and he shook the car back and forth as I was trying to get the shifter to work. Nothing. I then called AAA and they came out and could not get the darn thing into any gear. Since my car is always garaged when I am at home he could not tow it with the truck he brought because he could not get the car into neutral in order to tow it. He said they had to send a tow truck out that had tire lifts on it in order to get the car removed from my garage and get it to the dealer. Now AAA calls me a few hours later and asks if I will sign a Damage Waiver when they come and get the car because they have to drag the car out of my garage.....I said absolutely not!! Well of course it's Sunday so now I have to wait until tomorrow but have any of you had this problem??
Yep, had the same issue, I was able to push a lever to get it unstuck but had to do it everytime until I got the shifter replaced, this is just another big and common problem with these cars and chrysler refuses to take full responsibility like they should, bad business. Here are some links to help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ObHmWVl0aw http://www.chargerforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77641 http://www.lxforums.com/board/showthread.php/227831-Stuck-in-park- Here-s-a-quick-fix-to-get-you-going

This also happened to me a couple of years ago, got in the car one morning and the shift was locked solid, I called AAA and when the guy arrived he said he couldn't tow it, instead he took the cover off the gear shift and showed me a broken plastic piece that was bright pink and he told me they break all the time, he did a temporary repair until a new one arrived and all was well. Why Chrysler fit the cheapest piece of plastic to such an important part of the car is a joke!
Well, I just had this issue happen for the first time tonight so I will be calling in the morning. I was able to find the letter online covering all of the 2005 and 2006 editions for this defect as part of the lifetime warranty but now will be the time issue for the repair I guess. I will find out tomorrow.
thriftygal answered 9 years ago
I wrote on this thread a few days ago that I could not get my 2006 Dodge Charger RT out of the PARK position. It would not shift into any gear and the reset button did not work. Tow truck arrived-the guy took the console apart and jimmied something just to get it started. I then drove it to the dealer -they replaced the entire shifter assembly at the tune of $426.92. I only have 52,000 miles on this car. I was not happy but of course I love the car.
All good info above. I experienced the same problem twice in a row now on my 05 Magnum RT.It is a serious safety concern, so I called my local Chrysler dealer and discussed it with the service manager. He confirmed that there was an "advisory" or something like that and checked my VIN. I do not know what determines eligibility for the extended policy to solve the problem, but my VIN was one of those on the "list". So, I made an appointment for early next week to have them take a look. I'll report back what I find out. Apparently, Chrysler is aware of the issue as mentioned many times above and confirmed by my service manager as he read off the list of symptoms and possible causes, again as mentioned above, but have not gone "public" about it leaving individual owners to inquire on their own. I think if we all report it to the NTSA then something will done in a more public way such as a wide recall for all affected vehicles and not just certain VINs.
I have the same problem with my 2006 charger my question is by changing the gas tank did it solve the problem
I don't know yet. They were able to repeat the problem and a new gas tank has been ordered but is on serious back order. The good news is that my VIN was covered under the extended warranty. So, meanwhile I only fill the tank to about 3/4 full.
New tank fixed it for my 2006 charger.
so I just have to call the dealer and get them to check my VIN number to know if I'm on the list
Yes, that's what I did to get the ball rolling. Describe the issue, ask about the extended warranty and they will ask for your VIN.
how much do the gas tank cost to get it replaced if is not on warranty
My husband has a 2006 Dodge Charger every time he feels his car up its stalls out he doesn't top it off and this is been happening for 2 years so now he only put 11 to 12 gallons of gas in it and there's no problem we spend about $1000 trying to find out what the issue was and everybody said there wasn't an issue
My husbands car also stalls out when he turns right or left after he put gas in it and and it also happens randomly
I have a 2006 Dodge Charger doing the same thing so I have a new tank put on and no more problems after that
My husbands car also stalls out when he turns right or left after he put gas in it and and it also happens randomly
I've changed my gas tank and put a new one on no more problems
Alright people listen up this will probably save you 1000 dollars and you going to get it fixed at the dealership. This is a common problem on dodge chargers 2006. There is a recall on it. Just go to the dealership and ask that you need to get a diagnosis tell them what the issues are. Tell them the car stalls when filling the gas. They will tell you they need to order a new gas tank free of charge even on the installation. If you go in and they dont mention that. Tell them you are in because dodge has a recall on it. They can't refuse. You have to hurry up and get it done.
Yes, I had mine done on my 2005 Magnum, they replaced the tank under extended warranty. I don't think there is an official recall. Solved the problem
There is a recall. I wouldn't been writing this otherwise
I've gotten recall notices on other issue, but not for this. I was told by the dealership that it is being covered under extended warranty. Whatever it is or whatever you want to call it, they will cover the parts plus labor if your VIN is within the correct range. They will ask for the VIN first and check it against their list of covered vehicles and years. I'm not making this up, this is what happened with mine which is now fixed.
I'm at the dealership as we speak getting my tank replaced for free without any hesitation on Chrysler Dodge behalf called Monday fixed today
Told me Gas got in O ring and the sensor which are not covered by the gas tank warranty. So i have to pay $647 for those things but no charge for the new gas tank. I have only had the car 2 months so the prior owners likely got the letter but did not act on it. So i am out $647 but at least by next Tues when it is done i will know it is all solved
If the dealership refuses to replace the tank for free. Just go to anothet dodge dealership. There are at least 3 dealerships around my area. There should be at least two around you guys areas. Don't lose faith. That's a manufacturer's mess up.
They do say they will replace the tank for free but the other items that the gas fouled they say are not covered. So for the items not covered they want $647 I will explain more about what they did once it is done
My 06 Charger is having the same problem. Called a local dealership who told me this is not covered under my vin #. Called another dealership and they said sure no problem if that is the problem then we will replace gas tank for free. So call around to other dealerships if you get told no.
Like I said. If the first dealership refuses go to the next one and so on untill you find the one that will do it for free. Me personally I would prefer to spend up to 100 bucks looking at the right place than spending more than 600 bucks. It's free come one people
I have a 2006 Dodge Charger and I have been through all of this and more! My car starting stalling at about 80,000 miles, it took me over a year to finally get Chrysler to put in a new gas tank but guess what, it still didn't fix the problem! I've been dealing with this and other issues for the last 2 years on my car, and yes they had me replace the termostat as well along with a ton of other stuff. Today I stalled out at a major intersection. I'm at 92k miles, I don't top off when I fill my tank but my died 2 days ago when I filled up and again today at a little less than 1/8th of a tank. Extremely frustrated, Chryler needs to address this problem now, I'm ready to take this issue to social media! #frustrated #howtoloseagoodcustomer
I have a 2005 Dodge Magnum RT and had the same issue I would fill up not even rounding to the dollar. I would drive it would want to stall and it did a few times. Had no luck with the dealer at all won't get into that one.I took it to the next dealer who would listen to me. I asked for mechanic to drive with me, we got gas and the same way I always did it and we then went for a ride! When I pulled into the parking lot she died. He had me leave it as is open the hood then told me to come here and look. It was spitting raw fuel back up into it! He then played with something on the passenger side and told me to start it wouldn't start he then said I had to give it gas like it had a carb! I said nope he said not feeling it huh? He made me laugh he then asks for a ball point pen...he placed then pen in whatever and told me to start it, she started! He then told me to run the gas out over the weekend. That he was going to have to change the gas tank and lines! I couldn't drive the gas out so gave it to him with half a tank. Once he changed everything I didn't have the issue again. He was AWESOME.
The stalling is definitely due to a defect in the gas tank as others have mentioned. Call Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 and refer to extended warranty X53. Let them know what issues you are having and they will surely accomodate you. I had my tank recently replaced and haven't had a stall since. This was a zero charge to me.
2006 Dodge Magnum RT Stalling after fueling up. Mechanic finally figured it out. The "rollover float" which is in the fuel tank is defective. When the tank is full the "float" thinks the vehicle is rolling over and shuts off fuel to the engine causing the car to shut off. This is probably the same problem.

2006 Hemi Charger w/ 183K. I changed the Gas Tank, EVAP and Purge Valve and still have the problem. Car will run beautifully for a month then will stall 20 times on any random day. Amount of gas in tank makes zero difference.
I started having this problem January 10, 2017. 2006 Charger with a Hemi, 80,000 miles. Figures since my husband who was my car guy has decided to call it quits with me I have no clue how to handle this. Reading the info above I report this problem along with my VIN and call my dealership. Glad to know I am not the only one.
I have a 2006 Dodge Charger r/t Dayton edition it has around 160k on it. It's been doing the same thing. I called and there is no recall on it and I don't want to have to pay over $1000 to get it fixed. Is there any ideas on how to fix it. I thought it was because it was very dirty in side the gas tank but NO. When I fill it up all the way it stalls and I can start it back up but it spits and sputters until I get home and let it sit over night and then I'll be able to drive it fine until I fill up again. Need help in Michigan
Call 1800-853-1503 and ask for the extended warranty x53 then will replace the gas take for free
My advise is to stop working on it. And don't mention anything about you working on it. Try different Dealerships and don't ask if they do the recall. Tell them you need the recall done and tell them the symptoms you're having. This is a very common problem on Chargers. Chrysler should/is be liable for it. Google the recalls for your specific car and print it out to show them if they're giving you a hard time. That's what I did, I can't remember the website but it shouldn't be that hard to find. Good luck.

Google "dodge charger extended warranty x53" and there are several write ups on this subject. All of the articles state that Chrysler is extending the warranty FOREVER on the 2006 charger, the magnum and the Chrysler 300 for the fuel tank. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated this issue after receiving hundreds of complaints of stalling. After the agency closed the investigation Chrysler said it will extend the fuel tank warranties on the vehicles involved to a LIFETIME provision.
All taken care of guys have a appointment next week to have it replaced.
Same issue with my 2006 Charger R/T. Ecm reprogrammed and fuel tank replaced last year at dodge. Car is doing it again and is un-drivable at this point.

I just had my tank replaced 2 weeks ago at no charge as there is a lifetime extended warranty, X-53 as others have mentioned. I also had to have the complete shifter assembly replace to a tune of over $300 though. Anyone know of any extended service warranty on this?
Took 2006 dodge r/t to dealership they changed fuel tank free of charge, warranty had been extended because 19 gal fuel tank was causing stalling, some valve was getting stuck
I needed a new fuel tank as well for my 2005 magnum rt...... old tank leaked and gas got into the vapor pressure line causing stalling..... everything was covered by the dealer but they just had to try and get me to pay $1,500 for new brakes and radiator a flush......
Hey guys, thanks to this forum I just had the tank on my 2006 Charger R/T changed, didn't cost me a dime! At first they were playing oblivious to the extended warranty, until I started pulling out the letter from Chrysler (google; dodge charger extended warranty X53) and a few posts from this forum. They'd wanted me to drop the car off, waste a day to have their mechanic determine the problem before they could order any parts. I told them no way, we already know what the problem is, get a manager in here! Next thing I knew, they said bring it in next week and we'll replace the tank. When they had the car, they called me and started saying "we have to remove most of the exhaust to get to the tank, because of the age and miles there's a lot of rusted bolts and such, which you'll have to pay for if broken", I stopped her in her tracks and said "look, I don't care what you have to take apart, this is a full warranty for parts & labor, so whatever you need to do to fulfill that warranty, has nothing to do with me, it's all on you and Chrysler to fix the problem." That was the end of that conversation! Thanks everyone!
Thanks to this post, I’m getting the tank replaced on a newly acquired 06 Charger I bought for my daughter First time it was filled after purchase it died 4 timeson the way home, then everything was fine. After next fill up (me in the car this time) it happened 3 times...always starting right back up. Called my friend who is a mechanic at the dealership and after diagnosis new parts are on order That’s to all who have done the legwork to make this possible
I'm having the same issue's with my 06 charger rt and I called Chrysler and they have a lifetime warranty on the fuel tank for the 06 07 model. So I'll be taking it in for service.

I just called my dealer and told them I have a letter from Chrysler in Auburn Hills, Mich to get a new gas tank. The service manager told me that I had to bring the car in and they would do a test on it first and then decide if I needed a new tank or not. Did any one else get told they had to have a test done?
No, absolutely not! Read the posts above to go to the links you need, showing that the tank has a lifetime warranty on it, period! No way you should have to waste a day having them check out what has been proven over and over to be the problem, spelled out right on Chrysler's letter! They tried the same with me, until I gave them a copy of the letter, and asked to see the manager. Good luck! Mark
I was having the stalling problem after filling up the tank too. After doing a bit of research (having spent $560.00 on a misdiagnosed throttle problem causing the stalling) I took my 2006 Dodge Charger RT to a dealership on May 31, 2018, its' still there waiting for the new fuel tank to BE MANUFACTURED!!!!!!!! SIX week without my car (yes they gave me a loaner). When you give a lifetime warranty you really should make sure you always have the parts available to the consumer!!
This is exactly what happened to me. Every time after refueling it will stall and the Rpm will bounce around. I called the dealership and it's covered for life. Keep in mind it's 2018!
I took my '06 Charger RT in last Tues. for the stalling issue, check engine light, and an issue I will address later. I told the service manager about what I had read on this forum and that I had called Chrysler to verify the warranty and to check my VIN number, and that my number was on the list. He called 2 days later to confirm that it was the tank and that it would be replaced under the warranty. He also said the check engine light was from both catalytic converters needing replaced ($2,500). I declined the converter replacement. While removing the exhaust system so they could remove the tank, the exhaust came apart at the converters due to corrosion. Since the exhaust had to be removed for a warranty item, they replaced the exhaust system, including the converters, under warranty. I love my dealership! The third issue I took it in for is that while driving with the cruise on, whenever I start to go up a slight grade, the trans (6 speed auto) will downshift to 5th. They changed the fluid and filter (needed done anyway, 99,000 miles) but it made no difference.Does anyone else have this happen, and is it normal for Chrysler trans to do this?
As far as I know motors running with gasoline do not need a "electrical fuel pump". I suggest you to by-pass it (remove the hardware & connect the electrical check). Drill a little hole (thick needle) in the gas cap as long as the motor don't light-off because of missing fuel (try engine at Max rpm). Prepare yourself with an extra battery starter during the restart operation. If it works let me know :-).
I had same issue, was told that there was a recall on the file tank, have my 2006 Dodge Charger being replaced.
I have same problem with 06 Charger. Has anyone in Los Angeles area had tank replaced? And at which dealer? Thank you
I literally just bought this with 06 Charger SRT8 with 46,300 miles and it just did the same thing. My 06 300C SRT8 had the same problem.
