roof rack carrying capacity

Asked by Neil Mar 17, 2020 at 07:09 PM about the 2012 Subaru Forester 2.5X Premium

Question type: Car Customization

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out whether my 2012 2.5x Premium Forester can support
more than the 150lb recommended roof rack capacity with an aftermarket
mount and cross bar system (yakima/thule). I am under the impression that the
150lb would be appropriate for the dynamic limit, but the static/parked limit
would easily exceed this and be as high as perhaps 300-500lb. Can anyone
clarify this for me?

If you can keep the CoG low and off to one side closer to one of the rails you'll be ok at a couple hundred pounds. Stress will occur more from trampolining over potholes and torquing a load in high winds or high g forces in fast twisties. Indeed, the better Yak and Thules systems can handle a LOT of mass if well-secured.
