Asked by Rissa Jun 28, 2014 at 09:18 PM about the 2001 Dodge Durango SLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving last night and lost
steering. The reservoir was empty
after I just filled it at home. I left the
car sit over night and went to look
today and there was a pile of steering
fluid under the car. I have replaced the
pump and hoses. I am not sure what
my next step should be. Please help

I don't know how it is getting out. After changing the pump, I put the fluid in while the person that was working on it was underneath it and saw no leaking from the pump or hoses

Have them double check all hose connections and hoses. A small inspection mirror is useful to look in the tight areas.

Is there any possibility that I need to replace the steering rack and pinion?

Anything is possible but without locating where the fluid is coming out you will just be throwing good money at the issue without solving anything. Is it still leaking the fluid out on to the ground?

Did they properly prime the power steering pump? If they did not get all the air out of the system it will not work.
