Switch to 5W30 oil. I did and it cut my oil consumption a lot.

EXACTLY. If still egregious try 5w40 in winter and then 10w40-50 in summer. Just FORGET about using the North American-onlky 0w20spec in horizontally-opposed mid-priced motors like all Subies. That said there was a population of early 2.5 DOHC that had rings improperly robot-cut. See if your VIN qualifies for a free block. Also, NEVER put "guards" in ANYTHING!
