Subaru Forester transmission failure?

My Forester was/is running fine but the transmission light came on on a long
road trip. The manual says to stop, we did, and the light went off. I stopped at
a garage, they put it on a rack and said it was “full”, but smelt ‘burned’?
I drove another 150 miles and the light came on again. Now my home garage
is saying I’ll need a new transmission,(according to the diagnostic test)?
Quote was $5000.  Any suggestions?

Hit up Subaru for a new transmission. They extended the CVT warranty out to 100,000 miles.
