Doubt it to be your fuel pump, so try the filter, its cheap and easy to do, I recogmend a new fuel filter every year. As far as a fuel pump goes its a electric motor driving a pump and does not know the fuel level
What I would do is a super tune up and clean. Buy some throttle body cleaner. Remove throttle body, tear it down and spray all of the parts inside and out. Remove your idle air control valve and clean that as well. Or, look it up on Rockauto and replace it. Some vehicles you can't really clean them. It's easier to just replace. Buy a can of MAF cleaner. Remove your MAF (Mass Air Flow sensor) and spray down the contacts. After all components are clean, I would start with the tune up. Plugs, air filter, fuel filter. I would check your coils and wires by misting them with water and seeing if you hear cracking or the engine begins to misfire. If no skip or idle change, then your wires and coils should be fine. If you remove the plugs and find that they are black and fouled, that means you have a rich fuel mixture. If black, I would also replace the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor which is located next to the thermostat housing, as well as you IAT (Intake Air Temp) sensor which is located on the side of the air filter box. Post back with results....good luck!
