2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i premium I could have sworn the speedometer and tach were backlit when the headlights were NOT on, am I wrong?

I've been driving this car since December, just the other day thought the gauges looked a little dim, could have sworn the speedometer and tach were backlit, but now they're not, and the service guy at the dealership says they never were.  Am I imagining things?  Or is it just that my sunglasses + shady road were to blame?

Yeah, it was sunglasses and shade. And maybe hoping they should have been illuminated. Never mind.
