2000 Ford Explorer Limited turn signals weren't working one night after work
and spontaneously resumed functionality on the road the next morning (after I
checked, but did not replace the fuses, as they appeared fine). What would
cause that? What could I do to prevent it from happening again?

Maybe the fuse was loose and after you put it back again good contact was resumed. If it happens again, then I would replace the fuse.
