have to hit starter with hammer to crank

Having clicking sound from starter area have to get someone to tap starter while turning key to get starter to engage. Is this a bad solenoid or starter?

The starter is no good it needs to be replaced

Before replacing starter make sure the electrical connection(s) at the starter and battery are clean and tight. If they are, replace the starter.
