what would make a 2003 mitsubishi outlander sound like a diesel motor?

my 2003 mitsubishi outlander started sounding like a diesel motor and found out the oil was low (engine light didn't come on) after the oil was changed, the motor still sounds like a diesel.  why

While it was low on oil you could have done major internal damage to the engine giving it it's new horrible sound. Get it to a REPUTABLE mechanic ASAP. It could be something simple like collapsed lifters. Get it looked at before you do more damage.
