2019 Rav4 Hybrid - High Pitch Noise

Asked by Crouton98 Jul 16, 2019 at 03:45 PM about the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited AWD

Question type: General

Is it normal for the Hybrid to make this high pitched noise (I say it sounds like
angels singing) when in reverse?

Yes, it's part of the Proximity Notification system, required by regulations, so that people can hear the vehicle when it's in electric only mode. The reverse is the loudest, forward not as loud, because backing up is more risky. But it's strange that it's louder than a regular gas vehicle backing up. I guess the regulations over-compensated in this case.

Unclip the plastic trim just under the hood and you can reach your hand in there to unplug it. Very easy fix. Ours is silent now." Alex, do you get "Vehicle Proximity Notification System Malfunction" on the display every time you start the car?
