Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I just replaced my speed sensor in my Alero but I
still have no working speedometer and my car still
wont shift out of first gear. What else could it be?
This problem started last night while I was driving
home with my cruise control set. All of the sudden
my cruise control turned off and I lost speed period
I was unable to accelerate out of first gear and my
car would just Redline my spedometer freaked out
for a little bit before it went completely out. There
was no signs leading up to this that I had any
issues with my speed sensor.

You would have to have the vehicle scanned for transmission codes to know what is going on. Most scanners will not read trany codes so your best to stop in at a trany shop for proper diagnosis.
Thank you. I'm afraid because of my location that's not an option for me at the moment. But I be able to find a scanner that will work for it
So with a handheld diagnostic the only code I found was c1232 and it says left front wheel speed sensor circuit open or shorted
Well that is a problem to be fixed, and does affect other things. So the problem is you need to get a new wire connector for that side. They have them at an auto parts store. The wires go bad internally since it right down by the wheel and road crap the tire spins up. Usually it is the wire connector from the wheel speed sensor that needs to be replaced. When you replace it put the whole length of wire in. Splice it in and solder the wires. This should take care of that.
I suspect the instrument cluster is bad internally. Does the odometer work correctly? If so, the its the IC as there is only one output from the VSS that provides the same signal to the odometer and the speedometer. Did you ever fix it? What did you do?
