My 2001 Honda Civic is running but only goes about1/4 mile before it coasts to a stop..still running but won't move, loud whine when I step on gas..if I shut it down, it'll run again but same thing continues happening. Can anyone give me advice please?

My honda civic lx 97 cuts off a lights and stop signs but cranks back up with no problem its a automatic,also when I press the gas the rpm goes up to like 4 and stays for a second then it finally sounds like it caught the shift and goes back down but does it all over again when having to accelerate its like has no get up and go power it takes it a minute.what could be my problem? 1 Answer

Was driving fine, suddenly slowed, made a whining noise, came to a stop but still engine running. Will run for about 1/4 mile when restarted, but happens again.

i have a 04 honda civic i drive everyday went to work this morning no problem.. when i tried leaving work car starts up every time but after 2 seconds if that it dies out... also tried holding down pedal and rpm goes up but still dies out and can hear like putty noise from exhaust fuel pump sounds like its working and i can see from engine it shoots out.... what can this be? 1 Answer
