I have a 98 jetta vr6 passenger side door won't open

Asked by woodbutcher Mar 09, 2012 at 08:30 PM about the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta GLX VR6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

this has happened periodically, I thought it was mechanical but power lock seems to be operating fine.  So I'm assuming its the vacuum lock that isn't releasing.  Last time it happened I locked and unlocked driver side and that seemed to solve problem is there something wrong with the alarm system?  Only way to get to the passenger door module is to break passenger door panel since door has to be open to access the screws, and I can't find a replacement panel anywhere so hesitant to trash the panel.  Is there any other way to get the door open?

I actually got lucky let the car sit for a couple of days and the door lock worked I took the screws out right away so I could remove the panel and took car to shop so they could replace the module. Ghosts in the machine. Luck aside I think the only answer if this happens is to find a replacement panel if this happens to you. Typical German engineering to put a screw in such a difficult place to access.
