Need advice of power liftgate staying open.

I have a 2008 Ford Edge Limited. Occasionally the power liftgate will open completely when I activate the key button, but sound its 'warning beeps' and start closing immediately. What may be the problem?

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/979660-2008-limited-rear-power- liftgate-wont-function.html -- this guy had a similar issue and it turned out that his factory battery was no longer strong enough to operate the gate. The battery would start his vehicle and everything else would work but not the lift gate. He replaced the battery and lift gate started operating normally.
