Poor Break-in Period

Asked by Felix Dec 26, 2018 at 02:03 AM about the 2019 Subaru Forester 2.5i Sport AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a new 2019 Forester with 5 miles off the lot. My dealer just said
to not red-line the engine for the first 500 miles. Mr. Gullible here (me) drove
about 1000 miles cross country on cruise control without really varying the
RPMs. Can someone speak to what kind of damage this might do to the
engine and what I can do this point forward to take better care of my Subie?

I doubt you damaged anything at all. Continue to vary your speed and RPM's for a couple of thousand miles, you can be sporty but not full throttle. Don't press it to the max until after your first oil change which I would do at 3,000 miles. My Subaru dealer says to drive it like you would normally so that your ECU learns your driving style.

Not an answer but, is an ECU...electronic control unit, or something like that? And if it 'learns' my driving style, then me and my 2004 Forester have had 160,000 miles and almost 15 years to get to know each other! That is so wonderful, but makes me fret that when I get a new/used next vehicle...it won't 'like' the way I drive. And my poor old '04 might take offense at the next driver. Better just stick with my old companion!
